About the wine

Originated from the Caparrito vines which are part of our flagship Imperial bottling and Cune Gran Reserva, the Reserva Especial 2016 is a special Tempranillo Cuvee, introduced exclusively on Vinsent. Smooth, tasty and with a great aging capacity, the quality of Reserva Especial 2016 is on par with the best available in the market from the Caparrito vineyard in the village of Villalba, Rioja, Spain.

The Tempranillo grapes for CVNE Reserva Especial 2016 came from our vineyards around Villalba, Briones and Torremontalbo, and which are over 40 years old. 2016 began with a warm, dry winter followed by an initially rainy spring and late-September rainfalls, creating good ripening conditions for the grapes. Rigorous work in the vineyard followed by hand harvesting with exhaustive two selection rounds, ensuring the collection of great quality grapes. To ensure gentle handling, the grapes were fed by gravity to French oak vats for the alcoholic fermentation. Once completed, the wine was then aged in French and American oak barrels for 24 months, followed by another 24 months bottle ageing in our century-old cellars until being released to market. Smooth, tasty and with a great aging capacity.

    A new red bottling, the 2015 Reserva Especial is a blend of 85% Tempranillo with the rest split between Graciano and Mazuelo from Rioja Alta. It fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 18 months.
    This is a wine that is sold by the barrel (really!) and will not be found in shops, as it`s only sold direct to the consumer. It has a profile closer to Imperial than to Cune Reserva. There are notes of spices, cigar ash and incense, classical notes of aged red Rioja, still a bit marked by the élevage. The palate is serious, medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a good finish. 40,000 bottles were filled in March 2018.
