The Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is a lovely bold structured Red Sangiovese wine. The Fruit from vines less than 10 years old supplies the dry, brightly aromatic Rosso di Montalcino. Handpicking of the is fruit pretty early for the region followed by a long maceration. Most of the grapes are fermented in resin-lined cement using native yeasts, except for those destined for the Riserva, which are vinified in wooden vats. The Rosso wines see ageing for 12 months in Slavonian oak. Biondi Santi does not use new oak, as it is thought to add aggressive tannins to the naturally tannin-rich Sangiovese.
The wines tend to be fragrant and floral with savoury hints, with bright berry and cherry fruit and peppery spice flavours over a backbone of fine tannins and acidity. Riservas are only released in the best years, can last for many decades and often need 15 or more years to be tasted at their best.
2015 has been one of the best vintages ever produced, it was unbelievable.

Regarding people that think we are old, we use the latest and best technology. Very simply, we produce a wine with the style it had when it was invented. That's what our family has always done. People that think the wine is old, and not modern, they are right in one way, because we do not produce modern wine. The style of the wine has always been the one protected by the family, to keep it as when Clementi [Santi] first made it [in the 1860s]. For us, this is crucial, as people have to like, more or less, the wine. That's our style and it's not an old wine. Old doesn't mean that it isn't made with the highest technology in the market.”
