If any soil was tailor-made for Syrah, it would be granite. So when Gilles Troullier came across a 0.5 ha vineyard of youngish, head-pruned Syrah outside of the village of Trevillach in the Roussillon planted on pure, sandy granite soils, he knew that the site had potential. With extensive experience in biodynamic farming and employed, at the time, by a large Rhone Valley-base négociant, Gilles had all the tools necessary to cultivate an exemplary wine from these vines. By working the soil by hand and by mule, hand-harvesting the grapes and fermenting them with natural yeast in concrete and aging the wine in large neutral barrels – both French and Austrian-made– Gilles has revealed a terroir redolent with flavors and textures one more in common with the Northern Rhône. Suitably named Boreal, in honor of the northerly winds that buffet this east-facing slope, it is a lithe and sinuous example of Syrah with a mix of meat, lavender and smoky, dark cherry fruit.
"Boreal is a stunner that has more than a passing resemblance to a top Côte Rôtie" Jeb Dunnuck about vintage 2013

Considered by several wine critics as the most delicate Syrah from the South of France, this 100% Syrah is originating from a small plot nestled at 550m in the granitic foothills of the Pyrénées. It is the expression of great purity, with very delicate floral range.

by Gilles Troullier
Classic vintage featuring a beautiful maturity and ripeness coupled with natural freshness. This one benefited from our special attention! Carefully picked over, destemed and sorted grape by grape before vinification in tank. This micro cuvée has been then aged in French oak to preserve its mineral purity and delicate floral expression.
